Ireland’s EU Presidency Puts Dublin Closer to the Centre of Europe’s AI Conversation

On 1 July 2026, Ireland takes up the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, holding it through to 31 December 2026.

At one level, this is a regular handover in the EU calendar. But for Ireland’s AI ecosystem, it means something more significant. For the next six months, Ireland will sit closer to the centre of the conversations shaping Europe’s direction on artificial intelligence.

That matters because AI is no longer only a technology story. It is also a policy, governance and competitiveness story.

Ireland enters this Presidency with a unique position in Europe. It has long hosted many of the world’s largest technology companies, including some of the most influential players in AI. But the picture is now becoming bigger than hosting alone.

The recently published Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Bill 2026 is part of that shift. It signals how Ireland is beginning to build the local institutional framework needed to implement and supervise the EU AI Act in practice. In other words, the conversation is no longer only about attracting AI companies. It is increasingly about how AI is applied, governed and overseen from here.

That makes the next six months especially important for Dublin.

As Europe debates the balance between innovation and regulation, growth and safety, Ireland will have a more visible role in helping shape which issues gain momentum and how those discussions move forward. Seen through an AI Dubliners lens, this is not only a political milestone. It is also a visibility moment for the founders, researchers, companies and product teams already building in Dublin.

As Europe’s AI agenda turns more directly toward Ireland, local stories may find a wider audience.

At AI Dubliners, that is why this moment matters.

The next chapter of Europe’s AI conversation will be heard a little more from Dublin. And over the coming six months, Ireland has an opportunity to shape how its place in the European AI ecosystem is understood.
